We’re delighted to announce that Channel 4 has commissioned a new hand-drawn animated special we are producing for HarperCollins Children’s Books and Universal Pictures Content Group, of classic children’s book Mog’s Christmas in the 100th anniversary year of Judith Kerr’s birth. The team last worked together on Emmy award-winning adaptation of Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came to Tea, which was the third highest-rating programme on the channel in the whole of 2019.

A sparkling voice cast led by narrator Adjoa Andoh (Bridgerton, Broadchurch) brings Mog’s family and neighbours to life. Claire Foy (The Crown, A Very British Scandal) plays Mrs Thomas, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Dr Strange) is Mr Thomas, Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter, The Age of Innocence) and Maggie Steed (Paddington 2, Fisherman’s Friends) play the Aunts, Zawe Ashton (Mr Malcolms List, Fresh Meat), is one of Mog’s neighbours, Mrs Gaynor,  Charlie Higson (The Fast Show, Ted and Ralph) plays the Jolly Uncle, comedian Gareth Berliner (Dr Who) is the Chestnut Seller and newcomers Amelie Law (age 11) and Teddy Skelton (age 9) play children Debbie and Nicky. Meanwhile, Mog’s purrs and miaows will be provided by Tacy Kneale, Judith Kerr’s daughter, who said ‘Our own Mog was a huge part of my childhood. I hope I’ve done her justice!’

Created by Judith Kerr the author/illustrator and based on the antics of her first family cat, the Mog series of books started with Mog the Forgetful Cat, which was first published in 1970 by HarperCollins Children’s Books and has never been out of print.  The warm-hearted and funny adventures went on to inspire a further 17 picture books in the series, selling over four million copies worldwide and translated into 21 languages.

Ruth Fielding, producer and co-founder of Lupus Films said: “We are delighted to create another animated film for Channel 4 and Universal Pictures Content Group working with our long-time collaborators, director Robin Shaw and screenwriter Joanna Harrison.  This festive, family-friendly tale has huge cross generational appeal and is the perfect literary classic to adapt for the whole family to come together to watch. We are thrilled to once again bring Judith Kerr’s delightful illustrations to life in animation and to do so in the 100th anniversary of her birth feels very special”.

UK-based international sales company GFM has come on board ‘Molesworth,’ directed by Uli Meyer, to handle worldwide sales. GFM Animation will also provide production financing for the 2D animated feature, working with Lupus Films producers Camilla Deakin and Ruth Fielding.

Molesworth is based on the book series by Geoffrey Willans, illustrated by Ronald Searle. It tells the story of Nigel Molesworth, a self-confident public schoolboy with a mischievous nature and a penchant for daydreams. Matt Lucas will voice the title character.

The film is German animator Meyer’s feature debut as director; he has previously been a lead animator on films including 1996’s Space Jam, 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns and 2019’s Aladdin.

Molesworth is co-produced by Stephan Roelants for Luxembourg’s Melusine Productions, and Meyer’s London-based Uli Meyer Studios. The screenplay is written by Keiron Self and Giles New (The Canterville Ghost, A Christmas Number One).

Camilla Deakin commented: “The Molesworth series of books were among my favourites when I was growing up. The hilarious humour and wonderful illustrations by Ronald Searle cry out to be adapted as animation.”

“Bringing to life this much-loved character, using Uli Meyer’s fabulous 2D skills and great script, creates a great adventure story that we’re confident will appeal to a modern audience worldwide,” said Sean Feeney, head of production at GFM Animation; while Meyer described bringing the Molesworth characters to screen as “a lifelong dream”.

Channel 4 has commissioned Lupus Films to produce a snowy seasonal ident featuring the beloved characters from The World of The Snowman, created in collaboration with Channel 4’s in-house creative agency, 4creative. The 20-second film has been made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the very first transmission of The Snowman film adaption on Channel 4 and pays tribute to both the original animation and to the magical sequel, The Snowman and The Snowdog which was first broadcast in 2012.

The latest in a long line of iconic Channel 4 idents, the film transports the Channel 4 logo to a wintry setting where it oversees The Snowman, The Snowdog and James, the boy from the first The Snowman film, playing in the snow. The ident marks the very first time that all three characters will be seen on screen together. It premiered on the channel on the 6th December 2022 and will be shown regularly over the festive period.

The beautiful animation, in Lupus Films’ trademark hand-drawn style, has been lovingly hand-crafted by Robin Shaw and a small team of top animators using traditional 2D techniques in animation programme TVPaint.

Co-founder of Lupus Films Camilla Deakin said: “We are really honoured to have been asked to bring The Snowman back to life for Channel 4 for the 40th anniversary of this very special animated Christmas classic. It’s particularly poignant for us at the time of the tenth anniversary of The Snowman and The Snowdog and after the death earlier this year of our long-time friend and collaborator, the inimitable Raymond Briggs.”

Adapted from the iconic picture book by the late author and illustrator, Raymond Briggs, and published by Puffin, the timeless story of The Snowman was adapted and first shown on the newly-launched Channel 4 on Boxing Day 1982 and has been repeated on the channel every Christmas since. The Snowman and The Snowdog, the animated sequel to The Snowman, premiered on Channel 4 ten years ago in 2012 on Christmas Eve and was directed by Hilary Audus and Joanna Harrison. The film has won several awards – including five Kidscreen awards – and featured on the front cover of the Radio Times’ prestigious Christmas issue in both 2012 and 2013.
