Wishing everyone a fa-boo-lous Halloween!
To celebrate the recent release of our spooky animated special ‘The Ghastly Ghoul’ on Sky Kids, we’re delighted to share a few creative highlights from the film’s wonderful Art Director and Assistant Director, Corinne Ladeinde.
“Contributing to the Ghastly Ghoul was a rewarding and open process, from making suggestions for the script to character designs and props. Moodboards, colour scripts and reference images were a big part of generating, exploring and communicating ideas for the film.
We wanted to push the magical feeling of the film using an ethereal, supernatural colour palette of oranges, greens and purples so I started out with moodboards and colour scripts to help develop and illustrate this idea. It was also important to create variations of Gary’s colour scheme too to make sure he fit in well with the world without clashing or being lost.
We also used this process when developing the designs for the family, it was really fun gathering useful images for hair textures and character designs to help us create an interesting, modern family unit.
When it came to designing props for Bea’s bedroom I drew inspiration from Beatrix’s resourceful, creative nature and even from my own childhood doodles to add small details to her space.
The Halloween costumes were also a big part of the film of course! Gathering lots of reference material to inspire ideas and then working into mood boards really helped to bring ideas alive and connect the costumes to the character’s personalities.
Overall, I feel all of these elements help to create a textually rich world that has a magical yet relatable feel for kids and parents a like to enjoy.
